Emergency Lighting – BAFE Scheme SP203-4

If your organisation provides services relating to emergency lighting systems, achieving Third-Party Certification is an excellent way to demonstrate your technical competence and commitment to high standards.

Under UK legislation, it is a legal requirement for all non-domestic and commercial premises to be equipped—where appropriate—with an emergency lighting system. These systems must also be appropriately maintained, ensuring they remain operational and reliable in the event of an emergency, such as a power cut or evacuation.

Why Certification Matters

The Responsible Person or Duty Holder within a client’s premises is legally required to act with due diligence when appointing contractors for fire safety systems. Third-Party Certification provides clear, independent assurance that your organisation is competent and trustworthy.

BAFE strongly recommends the use of Third-Party Certificated organisations, and certification with SSAIB to the BAFE SP203-4 Scheme is a recognised and respected route to achieving this.

SSAIB and the BAFE SP203-4 Scheme

SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board) is an accredited certification body authorised to assess and certify organisations to the BAFE SP203-4 Scheme—the UK standard for demonstrating competence in emergency lighting system services.

Developed by BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment), the scheme offers a recognised framework to evidence your organisation’s ability to carry out:

  • Design
  • Installation
  • Commissioning
  • Maintenance of emergency lighting systems.

The BAFE SP203-4 Scheme follows a modular structure, allowing organisations to become certified in the specific service areas they provide. Whether you offer a single service or manage the full lifecycle of emergency lighting systems, SSAIB certification ensures your clients can trust your technical capability.

Many organisations choose to be certified in all four modules, but this is not mandatory. You may pursue certification for one or more modules relevant to your operations. Clients are encouraged to check which modules a contractor is certified for, so it's essential that your scope of certification is up to date and communicated.
