This scheme, developed and overseen by BAFE, provides independent, credible evidence that a provider is competent to deliver the design, installation, commissioning and/or maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
It is a legal requirement for all non-domestic and commercial premises in the UK to be suitably equipped with fire detection and fire alarm systems. These systems must also be properly maintained to ensure they are fully operational in the event of a fire.
If you are the appointed Responsible Person or Duty Holder, you must demonstrate that you have exercised due diligence when selecting a competent provider to carry out this work. BAFE strongly recommends the use of a provider that holds UKAS-accredited Third-Party Certification.
SSAIB is a UKAS-accredited third-party certification body, authorised to assess and certify organisations to the BAFE SP203-1 Scheme. This scheme, developed and overseen by BAFE, provides independent, credible evidence that a provider is competent to deliver the design, installation, commissioning and/or maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
The BAFE SP203-1 Scheme is modular in structure, allowing organisations to become certificated in one or more of the following areas, depending on the services they offer:
Many organisations certificated through SSAIB hold all four modules. However, it is important for clients to verify which modules a provider holds certification for, in order to ensure they are engaging a provider that meets their specific requirements and demonstrates compliance with legal responsibilities.
Each module within the SP203-1 Scheme adheres to recognised best practice and aligns with British Standard BS 5839-1 – the code of practice for fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises.
By gaining SSAIB certification to the BAFE SP203-1 Scheme, your organisation will demonstrate its technical competence, commitment to quality, and compliance with industry standards. This not only supports regulatory obligations but also offers assurance to clients that fire safety systems are being delivered to the highest professional standards.
