Lone Worker Monitoring

Independent certification for professional lone worker monitoring

Lone worker monitoring helps ensure that an activation from a lone worker device or application receives a timely and appropriate response.

Lone workers may operate remotely, visit customers, travel between sites, respond to alarm activations or undertake duties where colleagues cannot provide direct or immediate assistance.

When an alarm is received, trained operators assess the available information, attempt to communicate with the lone worker where appropriate and follow the agreed escalation plan. Depending on the circumstances, this may involve contacting a manager, nominated responder, emergency service or the police.

BS 8484:2022 covers the wider provision of lone worker services. The monitoring and processing of alarm signals by an Alarm Receiving Centre is addressed by BS 9518:2021.

Assessment may include:

  • Management responsibilities and documented procedures
  • Operator competence, training and security screening
  • Communication with lone worker devices and applications
  • Alarm receiving and verification procedures
  • Customer risk information and response plans
  • Escalation to nominated contacts and emergency services
  • Management of false and accidental activations
  • Protection of personal and location information
  • Incident records and audit trails
  • Resilience of communication and monitoring systems
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery
  • Performance monitoring and continual improvement

Effective monitoring depends on reliable communication, accurate customer information and clearly defined response arrangements. Operators must have the information and training needed to recognise an incident and initiate a proportionate response.
